soju: Cannot interact with channels and users on the bouncer connection

Error when connecting with HexChat to my soju IRC bouncer:

Cannot interact with channels and users on the bouncer connection

Reason was that I used the nickname field instead of the username field for the username + network: cweiske/irc.oftc.net@laptop.
