ODK 1.0.8 and Firmware 1.0.519 For your Thursday morning pleasure, a new update! We also have a special blog post with more detail and context on this release. https://www.ouya.tv/ouya-system-update-sep-19-2013/ Full Release notes (9/19/2013): Installed games are now moved to the back of their row in DISCOVER, so now it’s easier to find games you don’t already have. You also have the option to Bury (manually push a game to the back of a row) by pressing the right thumbstick (R3). DISCOVER is your playground…go nuts! The OUYA now informs you when a game has finished downloading and when it has finished installing. Because knowing is half the battle. Our intern has hidden an “Easter Eggs” menu somewhere on the OUYA… can you find it? Fixed an issue where sometimes a system update would cancel and not inform the user, so only a blank downloading bar would appear. Fixed an issue where high bandwidth could actually cause performance issues and crashes while navigating menus. Fixed an issue that could cause the OUYA to overheat in some cases. Fixed a handful of crashes that could occur after browsing DISCOVER for a long period of time. Added currency support for Pounds and Euros. This will be enabled NEXT WEEK. Existing accounts will continue to transact in US Dollars, while new accounts will transact in the currency appropriate for their region. A note on external storage: We understand everyone wants this feature (we do too!), so I just want to let y’all know that we are currently working on it. It’s not a simple feature to do right, so know that we hear your feedback and are working on it as our top priority. It’s coming =)
ODK 1.0.9 and Firmware 1.0.561 (Ogopogo) What's a Tuesday without a nice big awesome update? Read on, if you dare... Full Release notes (10/08/2013): External Storage will enter Closed Beta next week! Interested in participating? Apply here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1jIMULlQuv4BZ1MjWNdZ4mX_R2fyeL3VaMRqGHWMfm34/viewform Added the ability to display video (for game trailers and footage) in the game details page. Developers can now upload videos to Vimeo and submit a link to show that video on their game’s page. If a video exists, it will display in the first screenshot slot. Added the ability to download a game without entering its game details page. Just press the U button while highlighting a game’s tile to download. Fixed HDMI wakeup issue. If your TV was mysteriously waking up your OUYA, it should no longer do that after this update. Added “forgot password” option to the existing user sign-in screen. Now you’ll actually know where to go, if you can’t remember your password. We’ve changed “Download” to “Free Download” to make it clear that everything is free to try. Not everyone knew that they wouldn’t be charged for a download, so now it’s crystal clear. It’s free to try ALL THE THINGS. Enlarging a screenshot (or video) now goes full screen (instead of just bigger). We now highlight the search substring when doing a search so it’s much more clear why you are getting each result. We’ve also moved game titles that start with your search to the top of the list. It’s way better. Improved performance (speed and smoothness) in PLAY with lots of installed games. Added a pop up message upon starting the console to remind users how to connect a controller. Changed sorting of buried and installed tiles in DISCOVER. It used to be Uninstalled, followed by Installed and Buried (mixed together). Now it’s Uninstalled, followed by Installed, followed by Buried. Devs: When uploading apks, it’s now more clear that you can use your previously published apk if you just want to edit text or screenshots…. or VIDEO =) Devs: you can now hide or change the mouse cursor in your games and apps. For more info see the ODK Controllers document. Added Terms of Service to the console. Yup, it’s annoying to click through, but it makes the legal types happier. Think of the lawyers. In case you missed it, multiple currency support is now turned on! If you want to switch your wallet currency, there’s more info here: https://ouya.zendesk.com/entries/26777317-How-can-I-change-the-currency-of-my-OUYA-wallet- A bunch of other small bug fixes and optimizations. So, uh… what’s up with “Ogopogo”? Well, we realized that just naming each update after the date it was released was pretty boring, so we’re giving our updates a theme: Cryptids. A Cryptid is “a creature or plant whose existence has been suggested but is not recognized by scientific consensus”. Our first Cryptid is Ogopogo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ogopogo Corresponding blog post: https://www.ouya.tv/ouya-system-update-ogopogo-october-08-2013/ Keep calm, and OUYA on

Firmware 1.2.1084 Chupacabra Hotfix #2 Today's OTA has assorted bug fixes and also brings with it a significant set of new ODK APIs! As the OUYA Everywhere launch approaches, we want to give all developers a chance to ensure their games work wonderfully across all OUYA-supported devices. Controller Input Proper support for non-OUYA controllers has always been painful. While some developers have had the time & experience to do a great job of it, this just isn't where most developers care to spend their precious time. This problem only gets harder when you consider the OUYA Everywhere initiative as well. To that end, we've a new, easy-to-use, input remapping system to create games that work with a wide variety of controller hardware. The best news is that once you start using this system, we'll be able to add to the set of supported controllers without you doing anything else. The new API is currently available for Java, Unity, and MonoGame (and we'll expose it to our other supported engines in the future). Button Images One potentially non-obvious challenge of running on other devices is that the button naming scheme isn't consistent (eg: "O" on the OUYA controller is the "A" button on a M.O.J.O.). To reduce gamer confusion, there's a new API to get button names & images dynamically (which you can then plug into your own UI). M.O.J.O.) Device Identification With the help of the other two new APIs, we don't expect most games to need to know exactly what device they are running on. However for the few times when it is necessary to make device-specific checks, we've got you covered! The documentation can be found here: https://github.com/ouya/docs/blob/master/ouya-everywhere.md Engine Specific docs are found here: Android Java - https://github.com/ouya/docs/blob/master/ouya-everywhere-android-java/ouya-everywhere-android-java.md MonoGame - https://github.com/ouya/docs/blob/master/ouya-everywhere-monogame/ouya-everywhere-monogame.md Unity - https://github.com/ouya/docs/blob/master/ouya-everywhere-unity/ouya-everywhere-unity.md
Firmware 1.2.1187 Mini-Chupacabra Update and Developing Developers announcement Hey Folks, Today we launched our newest OTA and announced our new Developing Developers initiative. Here's the post on Developing Developers: https://www.ouya.tv/developing_developers/ And here's the post on the OTA: https://www.ouya.tv/chupacabra_mini_update/ Update Notes for the OTA are: Want to learn more about making a game? Check out the new TUTORIALS section under the MAKE category. You'll find an intro video to show you how easy it is to set up Unity and get a game onto the OUYA Store - this is the first in a series of videos we’ll be putting together for beginning developers. You'll also see a beta for AIDE - a program that will teach you the basics of coding and game development. It works with the controller, or hook up a mouse and keyboard for the optimal experience. Check out http://www.android-ide.com/ for more info. Want a better way to sideload apks? Go look at the new UPLOAD functionality in MAKE. This allows you to upload an apk to your OUYA directly from any computer on your network - no cables or ADB required. Simply get the URL from the UPLOAD section, go to that URL in a web browser, and upload the apk. It's kinda like magic. Added an easier way to upload logs for troubleshooting. While this isn't super exciting to an everyday user, it will help us troubleshoot and figure out fixes - which leads to a better product for everyone. Added more robust control for videos on details pages. The Y button will pause. Left and Right on the dpad or analog stick will scrub forward and back while the video is fullscreen. Added a simple progress bar. Minor bug fixes, as usual. Additionally, if you weren’t already aware, we’re very excited to point out that OUYA is available on the Mad Catz M.O.J.O.! You’ll see us pop up on more devices in the future as we work to get the great games on OUYA out to a wider audience.
Firmware 1.2.1353 "Chickcharney" Update Hey Folks! Today we launched our Chickcharney update. See full details at the blog: https://www.ouya.tv/otachickcharney/ Update notes for the OTA are: We’ve added support for “Community Content”. This feature will allow games to upload content that YOU create, so we can feature it in DISCOVER. As games take advantage of this new feature, you’ll start to see content created by gamers featured in DISCOVER and on the Home screen. BattleRoom and a DUCK GAME update are both coming soon – and will utilize this new feature. Developers will get full details on how to integrate with Community Content in a Dev newsletter. We now support Bundles, so check out our first bundle of ChoplifterHD and The Bard’s Tale from inXile! More bundles to follow… The OUYA interface has undergone an under-the-hood revamp with some over-the-hood touches. Scrolling in DISCOVER is a much smoother experience now. You’ll notice some animation improvements throughout the OUYA experience. We’ve taken some time to add little touches of polish that we hope you all enjoy. Loading times have been slightly improved across the board. Check the OUYA Presents video series in DISCOVER! Bob will take you through some of the awesome games OUYA has to offer – complete with PROTIPS and silliness. We’ve already got over a dozen videos to check out, with new ones added each week. Fixed an issue where exiting a game wasn’t returning to the set default launcher Limited the number of downloads in the queue to 10 – this fixes a few bugs that could occur with large numbers of queued downloads. Fixed an issue on the pairing screen where the incorrect number of connected controller would display. Patched a few Android security issues related to the Masterkey vulnerability. The usual misc bug fixes. For Developers MAKE -> TUTORIALS has new videos from Alex, Bob, and Nick! “Monetization Tips” provides information about monetization types and what might work best for your game. “Product Types” walks you through the different products we support so you can easily figure out what’s the best fit for you and your game. “More About Products” dives into some details and advanced functionality to take advantage of the OUYA products system. We’ve cleaned up the Unity plugin to make it much more simple to install and use. If you haven’t already noticed, we’ve revamped the Game upload and edit sections of the Dev Portal (devs.ouya.tv) Provided more clarity around which sections still need to be filled out in order to submit a build. Removed a bunch of confusing details and re-did the page layout to focus on the most commonly completed actions.

ODK 1.0.10 and Firmware 1.2.667 (Abominable Snowman) In all the excitement, we almost forgot to post here =) You can see the full blog post here: https://www.ouya.tv/ouya-system-update-abominable-snowman-november-21-2013/ External Storage is in open beta! Just plug in a USB drive to get started. Please see the list below for details and known issues. We support NTFS, FAT32, and ext4 file formats. Games on external storage are currently associated with the OUYA they were downloaded from (so you can’t use the storage to transfer a game from one OUYA to another. Sorry!). If you’ve modded your system with apps like Link2SD, you’ll want to undo your changes in order for external storage to work. You may notice some slowdown while a game is installing to USB. This is expected and is something we hope to address in future updates. After downloading a game to external storage, sideloading an app will put it on external storage. Some games do not properly move their saved game data when moved to an external drive. If this occurs, you can move the game back to its original location to recover the save files. When connecting a USB drive, scanning can take a few minutes if lots of games (100+) are installed. We plan to improve this in future updates, but if you download all of DISCOVER, scanning will take a while. Occasionally on bootup with an external drive attached, the screen wil go completely orange while the scanning takes place. You can wait for the scanning to finish, or reboot. We are looking into a fix. When ejecting the USB drive, sometimes it will say a download is still going even if one isn’t. We are working on a fix for this. UI revamp! We’ve made some significant changes to the look and feel of the UI. (A few screenshots at the bottom of the post) OUYA is now more intuitive, visually appealing, and better able to feature your games. It’s even got built-in functionality to allow us to update featured games and the wallpaper on the fly. All game titles are now underneath the tile art, for easier browsing. Tiles have new icons for installed games and game with available updates. Controller icons now appear for all connected controllers and will give a low battery indication. Double tap of the OUYA button will now bring up a System Menu instead of instantly exiting a game. The System Menu allows you to exit games, eject a USB drive, turn off controllers, or put OUYA into sleep mode. Games can now be set up to allow purchases from OUYA menus. Games that have enabled this will have a “Buy” button in their System Menu. We’ll be expanding and adding more functionality to this menu in the future. Support for faster system updates. We’ve enabled “Incremental Updates”, which means updates (after this one) will be much quicker. NOTE: If you’ve modified your system files, you’ll continue to get the full updates. Developers can now create links that allow you to download their game to your OUYA from the web. These links aren’t just confined to the ouya.tv site, they can be placed on any webpage. Keep an eye out for these links! You’ll see them start to appear on our newsletter, which you can sign up for on ouya.tv. Update Notes are viewable on the console. They appear after an update, or you can go to MANAGE -> UPDATE NOTES to view them. Good ol’ fashioned bug fixes Fixed an issue where users could not access the Internet because the system clock had reset, causing certificate problems. Fixed an issue where the download button didn’t always display the proper text. Fixed an issue where holding the analog stick to the side didn’t auto-scroll Many minor issues R2 and L2 can be used to scroll quickly in both PLAY and DISCOVER One other feature that we think is pretty cool is the ability to run A/B tests on OUYA. If you’ve not heard of A/B testing before, you can read about it here. Part of us being open includes letting you know that we’ll be running A/B tests and gathering results to make the OUYA better for gamers and developers alike. To start, we’ll be testing things like different DISCOVER layouts, different featured games on the Home screen, and auto downloading games for new users. It requires no changes on your end… just know you and your friends might have different experiences =).
Firmware 1.2.771 (Abominable Snowman Hotfix #2) Hey folks, We just released our newest mini-update (part 2!). Details are in the blog: https://www.ouya.tv/ouya-system-hotfix-for-abominable-snowman-december-18-2013/ Improved recommendations in the System Menu to dynamically give recommendations based on the game you are currently playing. Added settings to allow you to prioritize bluetooth or wi-fi based on their needs. Default settings will automatically prioritize bluetooth with 2 or more controllers connected. Navigation performance improvements in DISCOVER – This is an ongoing effort, but you should already see noticeable improvement. Tweaked the position of the active row in DISCOVER to better show rows below it. More External Storage Open Beta bug fixes Added spinners to USB dialog boxes to make it more clear that an action is taking place and it’s not stalled. Fixed an issue where ejecting a USB drive sometimes reported that a download was in progress when there was no download. Fixed an issue where entering game details of an installing game would display no information. Fixed several cases where a bad removal could require a console restart to get USB functionality back. Added the ability to ask survey questions in the System Menu. Your feedback is incredibly important to us, so keep an eye out for these questions. We’ve got improved error reporting and have added the ability for our Customer Service team to work with gamers to get better log information. Fixed an issue that would cause gamers to get an incremental then a full update when they shouldn’t (fixed going forward). Fixed an issue where sometimes Update Notes wouldn’t display after an update. If you don’t get this update right away, please go to MANAGE -> SYSTEM -> SYSTEM UPDATES. Also, as mentioned in our last update blog post, we are looking into XBMC Audio Passthrough and CEC support as our next tasks. We know y’all want it, so we are working on making it happen =)
OUYA System Update “Jackalope” – Feb 4, 2014 By James on February 4th, 2014 Hey Guys and Gals, The New Year is here, and we’ve got another System Update coming your way. The improvements were based on feedback and survey results that you all provided over the past several months. It’s vital that we provide you the best experience possible, and that starts by listening to your feedback. First, I’ll break down the changes in this build, then talk a bit about HDMI-CEC, and finally I’ll talk about where we are headed in the next few months. Full Release Notes: Added a 5-star rating system for games to help gamers find the best quality games. Total rating will be shown on each game’s tile and on the game details page. You can rate a game from the System Menu while in-game. We’ll be changing the criteria for getting out of the Sandbox to incorporate the number of quality ratings. Based on gamer feedback, we’ve added the ability to postpone a system update. Now you don’t have to wait for the update when you’ve got a group of friends over to play Bombsquad. For future updates, you will get a prompt asking if you want to download the update now or later. If you choose to postpone the system update, you can play games but you won’t be able to access DISCOVER or update your games until you perform the update. This is to ensure the best possible experience for these features. We’ll give you a reminder about the system update each time you return to the Home screen because updates are important =) Changed functionality of O and U buttons for downloaded games. O now goes to Game Details and U will launch or update a game. This is to make buttons more consistent within DISCOVER. Better support for navigation with bluetooth and IR remotes – we now respect the “Enter” key in OUYA menus. Based on gamer feedback, added an “overscan compensation” option in the advanced settings under HDMI. A reminder that all games now submitted to OUYA are checked to make sure they are within the safe area. This option is mostly for people running sideloaded apps and older games. This option can impact the visual quality, so keep that in mind when using it. Fixed an issue where the downloads folder in STORAGE wasn’t appearing for some users. Added rank numbers to the “Trending Now” category to make it clear that these games are in O-rank order. Added a quick tutorial for new users to inform them how to properly bring up the System Menu. If you don’t get this update right away, please go to MANAGE -> SYSTEM -> SYSTEM UPDATES. A Note on CEC Support As mentioned in some of our previous posts, we’ve been looking into HDMI-CEC support for OUYA. Unfortunately that investigation has revealed that we’ll be unable to support HDMI-CEC in the current generation of OUYA (as provisioning of the HDMI-CEC pins was never a part of our original hardware spec). For that, we apologize. But now that you’ve made it clear that this is a feature that’s important to you, we’ll make sure that HDMI-CEC support will be a default feature of our next generation of OUYA (note: this is not the recent 16GB OUYA. It will be in our next major hardware revision). And in case you’re just wondering what in tarnation HDMI-CEC is, you can read here for more info. In short: it’s a cool feature that allows you to control a bunch of HDMI connected devices using the same remote / controller. “So, what about remote control support for current devices?” you may ask? We are doubling down on supporting IR and Bluetooth remotes and will also be working to develop a mobile/tablet remote app for both Android and iOS. This update already has a few improvements for navigation with Bluetooth and IR remotes. If you have specific remotes you’d like supported please chime in on the OUYAForum thread. So what does the future hold? First, a little insight into how we plan: we don’t have a big year long schedule where we try to map out how every new feature falls into every milestone. These schedules are difficult to maintain and very rigid, so you can often find yourself implementing a feature that you promised 6 months ago, even if it’s not the best feature for your product. By contrast, we tend to look in detail just a month of two in the future. We obviously have high level goals for later in the year, but our approach allows us to incorporate feedback and re-evaluate what’s best for OUYA on a weekly basis. Our current big feature in development is an Achievements system. We’ll be reaching out to our community of developers and gamers for their feedback on our implementation so we can incorporate it into our design. Because of that, there’s no planned date for achievements yet…but know they are coming =) We’re also focused on improving discoverability of games, bettering recommendations, and solving the Sandbox issue. As always, bug fixing will continue to be a priority for us. We’ve seen OUYA get more solid each month, and we intend to keep that trend going. If you have specific thoughts on next steps for OUYA, hit me up at james@ouya.tv or go post your thoughts on OUYAForum.com – where there’s a great community sharing ideas for OUYA. For example, there’s a great thread on what you want us to accomplish in 2014. Tell us more! http://ouyaforum.com/showthread.php?9142-2014-Goals-for-the-OUYA-Community -James, Producer Dude
OUYA System Update “Chupacabra” – Apr 16, 2014 By James on April 16th, 2014 Hey Folks, Our newest update, “Chupacabra”, is now live for you to check out! The most notable improvement is that we now support Audio Passthrough for XBMC. We’ve heard your feedback and made this a priority for us to deliver a solution. Check out the full notes below for details. You’ll also see a lot of visual changes on the console – we’ve revamped PLAY and Details pages based on feedback we’ve received from our community. We’ve got 740+ games (!!) – so now it’s easier to find and track games you love through our new Favorites feature. newPlay newDetailsPage Check out the update notes below to get full details on a whole slew of new improvements: Audio passthrough is now supported in XBMC! Once you have the newest OUYA update, make sure you download the latest copy of XBMC on DISCOVER and you’ll have audio passthrough support for AC3, DTS, and AAC. Redesigned the Details page to provide a cleaner new look and feel. Now text is easier to read and screenshots are easier to navigate. Reduced screen clutter to make navigation more clear. No more stuff scrolling off the screen and looking like an overscan issue. Page is now more versatile to support various types of pages like the Developer page discussed below. Reorganized PLAY to make it easier to find games. The top row will function as PLAY previously did. We’ve removed the Thumbs Up system (too much overlap with ratings) and added a new “Favorite” system. Games you Favorite from the Details page will show up in the second row of PLAY. Added a category for Purchased games, so you can more easily find games you’ve purchased (installed or not). Added a category for Recent Downloads which will show currently downloading games plus the 10 most recent finished downloads. Added an A-Z category so you can find games alphabetically. Added Developer-specific Details pages (and support for other generic Details pages). Now you can learn more about the folks who make the great games you love. Get to know your favorite devs! These pages also allow an easy way to access all the games from a specific developer. As Developers fill out their profiles, you’ll start to see these pages appear on the console. Genre sections are now updated to have multiple rows. Instead of the previous “bucket”, Genres now have rows like the main page of DISCOVER, allowing the display of Featured games, New Releases, etc. Added a simple “download manager”. Games that are currently downloading will appear in the Recent Downloads section of PLAY (in addition to the places they previously appeared). By pressing U on a game in the download queue, you can move games to the front of the queue to set the order in which you want your games to download. It will pause any current downloads and resume them from where they left off when the prioritized games are finished. Game developers can now choose if they want their games to be Free to Try or have a price up front. Made pairing of Bluetooth media remotes easier. Using the PS3 Media Remote as an example: Navigate to the Android Settings located in Manage > Controllers > Pairing > Bluetooth Settings (Alternately, you can reach this by navigating to Manage > System > Advanced > Bluetooth) Activate “Search For Device” to begin looking for pairing requests On the Media Remote, press and hold START+ENTER buttons until the PS3 button begins flashing When the device appears in the Available Devices list, select the BD Remote Control from the Available Devices list The BD Remote Control should now appear in the Paired Devices list as connected. Added an option to keep controllers turned on (no timed auto-shutoff) in select Media programs (like XBMC). This can be found in MANAGE -> CONTROLLER -> SETTINGS. This new option will be enabled by default. Improvements to the new user flow Gamers no longer need to confirm their password as a new user Added a date of birth field and optional gender field for new user signup We’ve made it more clear that if you are a user that would like to use PayPal, you can always purchase vouchers from OUYA.tv – pay there with PayPal, enter the code under MANAGE -> ACCOUNT -> PAYMENTS, and you are good to go! For the cryptid, we’ve gone with good ol’ Chupacabra: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chupacabra Chupacabras are quite the media stars, having been featured in Scooby Doo, Dexter’s Laboratory, the Fantastic Four – and now OUYA =) We hope you enjoy the update and please keep giving us feedback! Hop on over to OUYAForum.com and join in with the community! -James, Producer Dude
